Tinnitus

Tom’s story | British Tinnitus Association

Hi, my name is Tom, I’m from Chesterfield, and I’ve been working for the British Tinnitus Association for five months now.

I come to the office every Friday and relish the pleasant environment inside. With the charity, I undertake mostly admin tasks, such as data entry, photocopying and using spreadsheets. I’ve also done some data analytics with them.

Truthfully, I did not find this work myself, it was found for me by another charity called the Autism Centre for Supported Employment. They are a charity who help people with autism find employment, as only 16% of autistic adults are in full-time paid employment. After these five months of working, though, I can say with certainty that I am very pleased that they found this for me. The friendly and supportive team around me make me feel very comfortable and welcome indeed.

Since finishing senior school in 2012, I have been to college, university and done plenty of volunteer work. In college and uni I studied mainly IT, while my volunteer work includes working at a railway station, a church, a care group for the elderly and now a tinnitus charity.

My future goal is an office-based IT job, and I believe all my past work and education is beneficial towards achieving that aim. In my spare time, I am very interested in rail, travel and politics.

Before hearing about the BTA, my knowledge of tinnitus was very limited. Even the pronunciation of tinnitus I was unsure of. But as a result of my volunteering, I now have a much better understanding of how tinnitus affects people’s lives and how difficult it can be.

I also realise what a great support the BTA is to those people trying to cope with their tinnitus. I hope to carry on working with the BTA for as long as I can.

Get involved!
