If you register with us on this website or if you continue to use our site, you agree to our use of cookies.

We are committed to protecting and respecting your privacy. You can read our Privacy Policy here.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a simple text file that is stored on your computer, mobile device or browser by a website’s server. Only that server is able to access or read the contents of that cookie. Each cookie is unique to your web browser. It will contain some anonymous information such as a unique identifier, the site name and some digits and numbers. Most websites you visit will use cookies in order to improve your experience as they allow a website to remember things like your preferences or what’s in your shopping basket. If a website doesn’t use cookies, it will think you are a new visitor every time you move to a new page on the site and it won’t be able to keep you logged in. This could be very frustrating when using our online forum, for example.

Some websites also use cookies to enable them to target their advertising or marketing messages based for example, on your location and/or browsing habits. The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) do not use cookies for this purpose, as our site does not carry advertising.

Cookies may be set by the website you are visiting (‘first party cookies’) or they may be set by other websites who run content on the page you are viewing (‘third party cookies’). Our site uses both these types of cookie.

The cookies we currently use

Session cookies: these four cookies are used to ensure you are recognised when moving from page to page within our website, for example when using our forum it means that you don’t have to log in separately on every page. The session cookie expires 90 minutes after being set, and two more expire after 24 hours. The member logged in cookie expires at the end of the user session.

Google analytics: these cookies are used to collect information about how visitors use our site. The information includes the time of your visit, whether you have been to the site before and what site referred you here. We use this information to see how many people use this site and what information people are reading and downloading, so that we can improve our site by understanding how people use it. These expire no later than 24 hours after being set. Click here for more information from Google on Google Analytics and your privacy.

Cookie consent cookie: this cookie recognises that you’ve clicked to accept cookies, so that it doesn’t ask you every time you use our website. This cookie expires one year after being set.

Shop cookies: these cookies ensure you are recognised as you place items in your basket and make payment. These have different expiry times depending on the function, but all expire within 24 hours or at the end of the user session.

Information we may collect from you

We collect information when you register on the site, buy products in our online shop, subscribe to our mailing list, provide feedback or contact us using our site. The information may include your name, address, email, telephone number and company details.

What to do if you don’t want cookies to be set

Some people find the idea of a website storing information on their computer or mobile device a bit intrusive. We recognise this and keep our use of cookies to a minimum, and ensure that they are used only for the effective running of our website.

If you prefer, you can block cookies by using the setting on your browser which allows you to refuse the setting of all or some cookies. However, if you use your browser settings to block all cookies (including essential cookies) you may not be able to access parts of our site.

Unless you have adjusted your browser settings so that it will refuse cookies, our system will issue cookies as soon as you visit our site.
