Is Vegamour Safe During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a crucial time of life for a developing baby. It is also something that can cause hair loss due to changes in hormone levels. This is why women having a baby are more likely to need something for hair loss than other women.

Unfortunately, many chemicals and products meant to cause hair regrowth are also unsafe to use when pregnant. In the worst cases, these can increase your chances of miscarriage, fetal brain damage, and other developmental problems.

What Vegamour Says

On their website, Vegamour has a Frequently Asked Questions page that is divided into different sections for their different products. None of the questions they answer say if their various shampoos or conditioners affect pregnancy, but Vegamour does have similar questions answered for some of their other products.

The Vegamour Hair Serums

In the section for the Vegamour hair growth serums, there is this question: Can I use the Vegamour hair serums if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Their reply to that is: “We get this question a lot. Only your obstetrician can you tell you what’s safe for you, but we can tell you that the reason that most serums aren’t safe for pregnant women is because they contain hormones. And the more common hair serums contain minoxidil, which is a drug. Vegamour hair serums do not contain synthetic hormones, nor do they contain drugs.

They’re always vegan and natural. But just to be sure, we’d recommend that you take a list of the ingredients (found on any product page) to your doctor.”

This is an unnecessarily long answer when Vegamour could have just said that they think it is safe but that you should ask your obstetrician just to be sure.

Is Vegamour Safe During Pregnancy?

The Vegamour Hair Boost Supplement Powder

Further down in their FAQ, Vegamour has this question: Is it safe to take GRO WELL Hair Boost Supplement Powder + Probiotic while pregnant or breastfeeding?

This question’s reply was: “GRO WELL Hair Boost Supplement Powder + Probiotic might not be suitable for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as those with medical conditions that require the use of blood-thinning drugs. As always, we recommend consulting with your physician or medical provider before beginning any new serum and/or supplement while pregnant or postpartum. Just to be sure, we’d recommend that you take a list of the ingredients (found on any product page) to your doctor.”

Besides the lack of explanation as to why those with blood-thinning drugs were mentioned here, Vegamour doesn’t explain why their product may not be suitable for women in this condition.

It doesn’t mention if there is a specific ingredient in it that pregnant or breastfeeding women should be concerned about. Nor does it state if it is a specific situation or condition a pregnant woman could have that is the determining factor in whether this hair growth supplement might not be suitable.

The Vegamour Anti-Gray Hair Products

Vegamour has two different Anti-Gray products. Its Anti-Gray Hair Serum has a section of its own and is also paired with their Ageless Gray Supplement in another section. Both have the identical question: Can I use this product during pregnancy?

To this, the first one says: “As always, we recommend consulting with your physician or medical provider before beginning any new serum and/or supplement while pregnant or postpartum. Just to be sure, we’d recommend that you take a list of the ingredients (found on any product page) to your doctor. We can tell you that the reason that most serums aren’t safe for pregnant women is because they contain hormones. And the more common hair serums contain minoxidil, which is a drug. Vegamour hair serums do not contain synthetic hormones, nor do they contain drugs.”

That is a lot of words for a section that does not directly give a yes, no, or maybe about the hair growth serum being safe.

Meanwhile, the section where they are both paired says: “GRO Ageless Gray Delay Supplement and GRO Ageless Anti-Gray Hair Serum might not be suitable for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women. As always, we recommend consulting with your physician or medical provider before beginning any new serum and/or supplement while pregnant or postpartum. Just to be sure, we’d recommend that you take a list of the ingredients (found on any product page) to your doctor.”

The ’might not be suitable’ is at least better than not answering the question at all. Still, a yes or no is preferable for women who need to know the answer.

Do Other People Answer This Question?

All Vegamour says about their products is that some of them might not be suitable for those pregnant or nursing. That is not a clear answer, and those in this condition need to know this.

First, I looked at the reviews for the Vegamour hair growth products. Unfortunately, none of the hundreds I looked through mentioned whether or not they were pregnant while using these hair products.

Next, I looked through reviews on blogs and found these contradict each other. CakeStyle outright says: “Is Vegamour Gro+ Advanced Hair Serum safe during pregnancy? Vegamour is safe during pregnancy, as its products are natural and vegan.”

Meanwhile, Cofes says that the products are “most likely” safe for anyone, including pregnant women, to use. The most useful site I found was 15 Minute Beauty, which pointed out that two of Vegamour’s products have Gluconolactone in them, three have CBD, and several contain hemp.

According to them, Gluconolactone is safe to use while nursing, but it and the other two are not advisable to use while pregnant. However, 15 Minute Beauty doesn’t explain why these ingredients are bad for pregnant women.

Gluconolactone, CBD, and Hemp

I looked up Gluconolactone and saw nothing saying it was harmful for pregnant women. In fact, more than one site stated that this compound is safer than AHA or BHA, which are often used in the same way.

The Advanced Dermatology website says that pregnant and lactating women and those with allergies should talk to a doctor first, but it doesn’t say Gluconolactone is harmful for either one. So, I find it confusing that 15 Minute Beauty said it was safe for nursing women and not for pregnant.

Both CBD and hemp are ingredient’s that the FDA strongly advises against, and other sites like American Pregnancy Org say the same. Any part of the marijuana plant should not be used while pregnant or breastfeeding.

This means that the following Vegamour products aren’t safe for pregnant women to use as they all contain at least one form of cannabis:

  • Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Brow Serum
  • Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Lash Serum
  • Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Hair Foam
  • Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Hair Serum
  • Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Replenishing Conditioner
  • Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Replenishing Shampoo
  • Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Scalp Detoxifying Serum

None of the other Vegamour products have cannabis in them, or any other ingredient I saw was listed as dangerous by the FDA for pregnant women. According to CNBS.org, it can make pregnant women dizzy, have an increased heart rate, have a drop in blood pressure, and can prevent enough oxygen from getting to the fetus properly, causing many problems there.

Final Thoughts

Vegamour is not helpful in their reply to the question: Are Vegamour products safe for pregnant women? Though the FDA’s warning against using any cannabis is more for internal use (the only Vegamour products having it being ones used topically), it can still be absorbed into the bloodstream when used topically.

CNBS also states that women are more likely to become anemic when using cannabis before becoming pregnant. For this reason, I recommend women who want to use Vegamour only use the Vegamour hair products that don’t have cannabis in them even if they are not pregnant or nursing.
